Daphne du Maurier though born in London, lived most of her life in Cornwall. Her most famous novels, Rebecca and Jamaica Inn are set in the mystic land that combines rugged coastline and agricultural paradise. Celtic legends abound here and a history of smuggling and wrecking linger today in a tangible way at the many ancient coastal villages to be visited.
Lorna Doone is an other classic novel and inspiration to many motion picture and television productions. The Exmoor National Park is the beautiful setting for R.D. Blackmore's romantic adventure of the 17th Century. It is said Ned Kelly got the idea for wearing armour from the Outlaw Doone clan. The beauty of the area is breathtaking and you can visit this locale and feel as though you have stepped back into history.
Poet Laureate, Sir John Betjeman, held a love for Cornwall throughout his life. He wrote tour guides for the county as far back as the mid-1930's and loved the romance and mystery the area provided, gaining inspiration for his literary works. He lived there for the last years of his life and chose it to be his final resting place. We use an original Shell Guide as the basis for our adventure. |
